A champion of the Braeburn variety, grower Les Hollowell, a second-generation orchardist, has managed Rancho Royale since the trees were planted seven years ago.
Because he has such an interest and investment in the Braeburn, Les traveled to the variety's native New Zealand to learn more about its growing practices. In New Zealand, Les learned that the Braeburn is not considered a red apple with a yellow background, but a green apple with a red cheek. With this in mind, Les concentrates on picking the Braeburns for their unusual flavor rather than for color.
Rancho Royale is located on the Royal Slope (left) above the Columbia River in eastern Washington.
